The Guide to a Confident Smile

A confident smile can be the difference between a successful, happening social and professional life, and a shy, embarrassed one where you are afraid to show your teeth in public. To make sure you achieve the former, you need to get a confident smile, and for that, you need an effective teeth whitening procedure.

You can choose from a variety of teeth whitening products and procedures, which are easily available, including over the counter whitening toothpastes and gels, strips, rinses, trays, or you can opt to ask your dentist for prescription strength whitening products. However, before you choose anything, do consult with your dentist so you can avoid potential mishaps, as these products and treatments are not always recommended for everyone.

Whitening Toothpastes

There are mild abrasives in every toothpaste out there, which help remove any surface stains on your teeth. However, they may not always be entirely helpful, thus requiring you to use whitening toothpastes, which additionally contain chemical agents or gentle polishing which offer more effective stain removal. Good quality whitening toothpastes can:

•    Help remove surface stains, and do not contain bleach.
•    Lighten your teeth’s colour, usually by one shade.

If you require more intense results, such as teeth which are 3 to 8 shades lighter, you will need to go to your dentist for light-activated whitening.

Over the counter and professional whitening products contain carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide, which help lighten the colour deep in the tooth.

Whitening Strips and Gels

Whitening gels are available over the counter from most pharmacies. These are peroxide-based, clear gels which produce generally satisfactory results when applied to the surface of your teeth using a small brush. Initial results can usually be seen within a week, while the effects are retained for around 4 months. You should ideally apply these gels twice a day, every day for 14 days.

Whitening strips are thin strips, again easily available from most pharmacies, which are coated with a peroxide-based whitening gel. They are virtually invisible and should be applied twice a day, daily for 30 minutes for 14 days. Initial results become apparent in less than a week, while the effects are sustained for around 4 months.

Whitening Rinses

Whitening rinses are among the latest, most innovative of teeth whitening products. In addition to helping whiten your teeth, they work to freshen your breath, and reduce gum disease and dental plaque as well. All you need to do is swish these rinses around in your mouth for up to a minute, twice a day, before you brush your teeth, and you should see satisfactory results in around 12 weeks.

In-Office Whitening

The quickest way to whiten your teeth is to opt for in-office bleaching at your dentist’s or cosmetic clinic. This is because prescription-strength whitening products are directly applied to your teeth, under the supervision of a qualified medical practitioner, thus providing the most effective results, and without any risks or side effects.
